Who this list is for

Divers and whale-shark seekers on US$100-US$300/night planning 5-10 nights inside the SAMPA — the year-round whale-shark zone — with a dive-led programme rather than resort leisure.

Who it isn't for

Travellers on short stays (the domestic-flight-plus-speedboat transfer eats a day each way), non-divers who'd find the single excursion focus monotonous, or honeymooners wanting seclusion (see our resort lists).

Built by divers for divers and run with a discipline that justifies the all-inclusive premium. Groups are kept to four or five, dive briefings are real briefings rather than waiver theatre, and the in-house tally of whale-shark encounters in 2025 ran into the hundreds. The 2.5-kilometre stretch of beach off the property is the best house-reef-adjacent stroll on the island, and dinners on the rooftop are quietly excellent. Couples consistently rate the location 10/10. Pick this if diving is the point of the trip.

    Bliss Dhigurah

Bliss is the polished mid-market choice, with a real swimming pool, a Jacuzzi sun-deck and a kitchen that turns out the better Maldivian-meets-international menu on Dhigurah. The excursion team is consistently singled out in 2025 reviews for whale-shark trips that come back with the goods more often than not. Note the island honest truth that whale-shark snorkelling here is a flotilla — every guesthouse has its own boat, and crowding can be intense; Bliss handles the choreography with more grace than most.

    Dhiguveli Maldives

Dhiguveli sits at the village end nearest the bikini beach, which on a long, narrow island like Dhigurah saves you twenty minutes a day. Rooms are spacious and turned over twice daily, the showers are generous, and the staff are noticeably present without hovering. The lunch and dinner menus deserve their reputation; breakfast is the weak link. Be honest with yourself about manta and whale-shark expectations, the property is candid that excursion sightings run roughly fifty-fifty.

The most resort-feeling option in the village: beachfront, larger rooms, some with private plunge pools, and a quietly competent breakfast service noted for variety in April 2025 stays. The Wi-Fi is patchy in-room, which is an old complaint and worth a heads-up. Trip organisation has been hit-or-miss; the room itself is consistently the highlight. A good fit for travellers who want a half-step toward resort comfort without leaving the local-island texture.

    Beach Hotel Dhigurah

A new build that landed at the start of the bikini beach, which is the location everyone wants on Dhigurah. Thirty rooms across ocean-view, beachfront and "comfort" categories, plus a small spa, an in-house coffee club and the Ahi indoor restaurant for evenings the wind kicks up. September 2025 reviews are unusually unanimous on cleanliness and Wi-Fi speed. Excursions are bookable but priced firmly; if you'll dive a lot, run the numbers against an all-inclusive elsewhere.

    Ithaa Dhigurah

Ithaa is what people mean when they say a Maldivian guesthouse runs like clockwork. Rooms are kept relentlessly clean, drinking water is refreshed several times a day, and the breakfast spread quietly improves over the length of a stay. Excursion runs across 2025 brought guests a steady mix of mantas, whale sharks, dolphins and turtles, all without the marketing puffery. The North-West Beach is steps away. As value-for-money picks go, this is one of the best on the island.

A minute from the North-West Beach, with smart open-air showers in some rooms and a couple with Jacuzzis, an unexpected upgrade for the rate. The kitchen does Asian and European with restraint, and the menu shifts daily, which keeps long stays interesting. The hot tub and small garden lounge fill up at sundown. Dive and whale-shark logistics are handled without fuss through the front desk.

    Athiri Beach Maldives

Athiri has the new-ish infinity pool that nudges Dhigurah toward boutique territory, and a beach-side terrace built for sunsets. The PADI 5-Star centre on site, with Nitrox available, is a real draw for divers who don't want to bus to a partner shop. Two recurring 2025 caveats: the broadband promises more than it delivers, and the breakfast spread leans a little narrow. Still, for the location and pool combination, the price is fair.

    Whaleshark Beach

A small operation that punches well above its three-star price. Rooms have private balconies, smart TVs with Netflix loaded, and 50-Mbps Wi-Fi that actually delivers. The rooftop restaurant is the nightly draw, and the front-office team is consistently praised in recent reviews for keeping the place running like a much bigger hotel. A sensible base if you want a soft-launch into Dhigurah without paying boutique prices.

The newest opening on the island, brand-new everything, a ground-floor restaurant that's quietly competent and a position close to the harbour that makes excursion mornings short. The honest caveat in late-2025 reviews is the construction next door, dust and noise from 7am to 9pm. Ask for an interior-facing room until that wraps. If you can time around it, the property itself is the cleanest, most contemporary on Dhigurah.

Methodology

First-hand editor stays on Dhigurah in 2025 and 2026 form the baseline. We coordinated with the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) research team on whale-shark season data, cross-checked dive-centre certifications against the PADI IDC registry, and read Booking and TripAdvisor for sentiment only — not for ranking inputs.

Each resort carries an editor's score against our five criteria, shown with every entry. The scores are our judgment — a way to make the ranking legible — not aggregated third-party ratings.

How we ranked

  1. 01 Whale-shark and manta excursion depth — since this is why travellers book Dhigurah.
  2. 02 Bikini-beach proximity — the 2.5 km north-western stretch is among the country's best local-island beaches.
  3. 03 In-house or partner dive operation (PADI 5-Star preferred).
  4. 04 Room standard and Wi-Fi — long stays are common on Dhigurah and the infrastructure matters.
  5. 05 Excursion-operational consistency — Dhigurah's flotilla crowding is real; better operators choreograph it.

Sources we check

We rank against primary sources, not crowd-review averages. Where a list cites an award, rating or registry, it comes from one of these:

What we considered and didn't include

Banana Residence
Operational mid-tier; older room product and breakfast weakness weigh against the 2024-2025 entrants.
Lux Dhigurah
Not to be confused with LUX* South Ari Atoll — a separate, smaller guesthouse that doesn't reach the consistency needed for the ten.
Vista Sky Dhigurah
Reasonable value; 2025 Wi-Fi and water-pressure patterns knocked it below the ten this cycle.

Questions readers ask

Which is the best guesthouse on Dhigurah right now?

Our 2026 number one is Boutique Beach Dhigurah — built by divers for divers, with small groups, proper dive briefings, and consistently strong whale-shark encounter numbers throughout 2025. It scores highest on excursion depth, dive quality, and operational consistency. Bliss Dhigurah sits close behind for travellers who want a swimming pool and a stronger kitchen alongside the excursion programme.

How do I get to Dhigurah from Malé?

Dhigurah is in South Ari Atoll, which is farther from Velana International Airport than the central and north atolls. The most common route is a domestic flight from Velana to Maamigili Airport (Ari Atoll), around 25–30 minutes, followed by a short speedboat transfer to Dhigurah of roughly 10–15 minutes. Total door-to-door travel runs around 2–3 hours including airport waits. Budget roughly US$130–200 per person return for the domestic flight. A direct speedboat charter from Malé is possible but long — typically 3–4 hours depending on sea conditions — and mainly used by groups chartering private boats. The public ferry from Malé is infrequent and slow; plan for a day each way if you go that route.

Are whale sharks guaranteed on Dhigurah?

Nothing involving wildlife is guaranteed, and any operator who says otherwise is selling rather than informing. That said, South Ari Atoll is one of the most reliable whale-shark destinations on the planet — the animals are recorded year-round inside the SAMPA Marine Protected Area, not just in one narrow season. Sightings on a multi-day stay are realistic rather than lucky, but conditions, sea state and individual days vary. The writeups on this list distinguish operators who are candid about fifty-fifty days from those whose track record in 2025 ran into the hundreds of encounters.

What does a stay on Dhigurah actually cost?

Guesthouses on this list run from around US$100 to US$300 per room per night, with most of the ranked ten falling in the US$120–220 range. Excursions — whale-shark snorkelling, manta trips, diving — are typically priced separately at US$40–100 per person per trip unless you're on an all-inclusive package. A five-night dive-focused trip for two, including transfers from Malé, accommodation and daily excursions, typically runs US$1,500–3,500 depending on property choice and how much diving you do.

Is Dhigurah an inhabited island? What should I know before I go?

Yes — Dhigurah is a local Maldivian village with a resident community. The usual local-island conventions apply: modest dress in the village (cover shoulders and knees away from the beach), no alcohol on the island itself (guesthouses do not serve it; some trips offer drinks on excursion boats offshore), and the designated "bikini beach" on the north-western shore is where swimwear is appropriate. That bikini beach — the 2.5 km stretch this list ranks so heavily — is genuinely one of the best on any inhabited Maldivian island.

When is the best time to visit Dhigurah?

Dhigurah works year-round for whale sharks because South Ari is a year-round zone, not a seasonal aggregation site. For sea conditions and general weather, the dry northeast monsoon (roughly December to April) brings calmer water and clearer visibility. The southwest monsoon (May to November) brings rougher surface conditions on some days but is also when manta sightings at nearby cleaning stations tend to peak. Rates are generally lower May through October, which makes that window good value for travellers whose priority is the water rather than the sunbathing.

Do you need to be a certified diver to enjoy Dhigurah?

No — snorkelling with whale sharks is the centrepiece activity and requires no diving certification. Most operators run it from the boat surface. That said, Dhigurah draws a high proportion of certified divers because the SAMPA site offers structured reef dives alongside the megafauna trips, and several guesthouses on this list have PADI-accredited operations on site. If diving is your main reason for coming, check which properties have an in-house centre versus a partner arrangement — the detail grid on each entry notes this.
